Mgt527 - For many years, the decision for companies of what operating system to use was easy since Microsoft products were the only real viable option. However, with its growing popularity and compatibility, Linux is rapidly making a name for itself, forcing companies to take a closer look at this once slighted operating system. Riordan Manufacturing is one such company that is faced with this decision. Riordan Manufacturing has requested an operating system update for all of its server systems and has historically always used Windows based operating to do so. Despite this past, Riordan is strongly considering migrating all support servers to Linux and in an effort to reduce operating system cost and tailor the operation system to meet their specific requirements. Additionally, Riordan Manufacturing will conduct research to compare and contrast Linux and Windows Server in the following areas:
• Security
• Administration
• Networking
• Performance
• Programmability
Mgt 527 - After a through investigate of the above areas by the IT department, a final decision will be made on what operating system Riordan Manufacturing will migrate to.
Pos371 - Security
Pos 371 - Riordan Manufacturing’s network configurations consist of a heterogeneous UNIX and Windows environment. UNIX has been around for more than 40 years and is known for its’ robust power and scalability. According to the Open Group, “Security, which is often seen as a weakness for UNIX-based systems, is ensured using dedicated communication lines and secure communications protocols, along with strict authentication procedures” (Para. 42). This means UNIX, just like Windows, requires configurations to make it a more secure system. Setting up file permissions, user access controls, as well as shutting down network services not currently active are just a few of the ways that help close the gap to unauthorized entry.
